Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is located in the northwest side of Michigan's Upper Penninsula; a 9-10 hour drive from southeast Michigan, or only 6 from Minneapolis.
The Porcupine Mountains are a truly beautiful place. This wilderness area is one of the largest in the Midwest. Old growth forests, waterfalls, and panoramic vistas delight hikers willing to get away from the cities and into the wild.

With 90+ miles of hiking trails, there are trip options to suit all groups: from short scenic hikes to luxury cabin sites to strenuous treks to backcountry locations.

Our favorite? Three (or more!) days of hiking in the fall.

For those that want to hit the water, Lake St. Clair offers a special experience. The St. Clair River delta area is the largest freshwater delta in the world, and can be quite interesting to explore. For somewhere closer, the western shoreline also has fun stretches to paddle.
We can lead custom sea kayak trips for groups of five or less. These trips are best suited to paddlers who have taken our Kayak Essentials safety course and want to see where a sea kayak can take them.

Negwegon State Park is located on the northeast side of Michigan's Lower Peninsula; on the shores of Lake Huron, just south of Alpena. It is about 3.5 hour drive from southeast Michigan.
Negwegon State Park is a great example of Michigan wilderness. It is rustic and undeveloped with a beautiful stretch of Lake Huron shoreline. It is one of just a few designated dark-sky preserves in Michigan, making it a great place for stargazing.

The trails to the backcountry campsites are suitable for any ability levels; this park allows for a perfect introduction to backpacking.
